Chapter 6 - WHY I SAID NO THE FIRST TIME

Daniel asked me again that evening.

Not romantically.

At the long kitchen island in his main house with Rebecca beside me and Vivian across from us.

“If we marry before Friday, the trustee can certify my branch Monday. Victor loses the votes required to remove me.”

“And then?”

“I appoint an independent special committee. Vivian returns as outside counsel. We preserve the audit.”

“And what do you get from me besides a signature?”

“Time.”

I looked at Rebecca.

She did not nod.

Good lawyers don’t make moral choices for you.

So I said no.

Daniel’s face barely moved.

“All right.”

Vivian looked surprised.

“I need to understand something first,” I said. “If I marry you and help save your control, what stops you from becoming another Hayes who protects the company when truth gets expensive?”

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

“Nothing.”

At least he understood the question.

“Then no.”

I took the children back to the guesthouse.

For several hours, I thought that ended it.

Then consequences arrived.

Victor’s lawyers sent a demand that Daniel remove us from company-owned property, claiming our presence created “governance and reputational risk.” The guesthouse was personally owned by Daniel, so they couldn’t force it.

Instead, someone called Child Protective Services and reported that I had moved my children into a stranger’s home in exchange for marriage.

A caseworker came the next morning.

She was professional.

That almost made it worse.

I showed her our rooms, the children’s food, Rebecca’s agreement, and explained the highway honestly.

Ethan listened from the hallway.

Afterward he asked, “Can they take us because we were poor?”

“No.”

I hoped I sounded more certain than I felt.

Daniel was furious when he found out.

Vivian was colder.

“Victor,” she said.

We couldn’t prove that.

Yet.

Then the caseworker mentioned one detail from the anonymous report.

The caller knew Ava had a strawberry allergy.

That information had never appeared in the press.

It was in Michael’s old employee emergency file.

Somebody inside Hayes Meridian was using my children’s history against us.

That was when my no stopped feeling like safety.

It started feeling like letting Victor control the timetable.
