Chapter 5 - THE TRUE HEIR

The family had used the word heir so often that it had stopped sounding like a relationship.

It sounded like a bank account.

The trust had been created by Arthur’s father decades earlier. Under its original terms, voting control of certain family holdings could pass to the eldest grandchild regardless of sex.

Arthur secretly amended related corporate agreements to favor the first male descendant in Julian’s branch.

The change was legally vulnerable and concealed from several trustees.

My pregnancy created a problem.

If my child was a boy, the family could present him as the future controlling beneficiary while keeping me dependent on Julian.

If my child was a girl, Arthur intended to shift assets into a separate trust connected to Julian’s next son.

That was why Beatrice had demanded to know the baby’s sex.

That was why Julian had become distant after I refused to share the genetic screening results.

And that was why Chloe’s pregnancy transformed from an affair into a corporate strategy.

The Vances did not know whether Chloe carried a boy.

They only knew that she had allowed early testing.

Julian knew the result.

He told his parents it was a son.

During her proffer, Chloe admitted the truth.

The baby was a girl.

Julian had lied.

He needed Arthur to believe Chloe was carrying a male heir because the family was losing confidence in him. Several investment funds had underperformed. Regulators were asking questions. Damian, Julian’s older cousin, was positioning himself to replace Julian inside the company.

Julian believed that producing the expected heir would protect his place.

The revelation did not make me feel victorious.

It made the entire scene at the shower even uglier.

Chloe had stood beside him believing her daughter guaranteed security.

Julian had stood beside her knowing his promise depended on a lie.

He had declared that one unborn child mattered more than another while treating both as corporate tools.

Two weeks after the raid, Julian was charged in Connecticut with assault-related offenses. Federal prosecutors separately notified him that he was a target of the financial investigation.

Arthur resigned temporarily as chief executive but remained on the board until independent directors forced a vote.

Beatrice claimed she knew nothing about the financial scheme.

The emails contradicted her.

They showed that she approved foundation payments to shell vendors and coordinated the plan to portray me as unstable. Prosecutors continued reviewing whether her conduct supported criminal charges or civil penalties.

The company released a statement describing the allegations as misunderstandings caused by former employees.

I was the unnamed former employee’s wife they expected the public to blame.

Then three foundation trustees resigned and provided documents of their own.

The Vance family had ruled through isolation. Each person believed they were the only one who had noticed something wrong.

Once the warrants became public, people began comparing what they knew.

A former accountant disclosed altered investor reports.

An executive assistant produced calendars showing meetings Arthur denied attending.

A driver identified private trips paid for by the foundation.

The empire did not collapse in one afternoon.

It began losing the silence that supported it.

I moved into Rachel’s guesthouse after leaving the hospital. Miriam obtained a temporary order preventing Julian from entering without permission or transferring marital property.

He called from an unknown number.

I answered only because I thought it might be my doctor.

“Clara.”

My body tightened at his voice.

“You are not allowed to contact me directly.”

“You’re destroying everything.”

“You shoved me into a table.”

“You threatened my family.”

“I told the truth about crimes.”

“You don’t understand what my father will do if he believes I caused this.”

For the first time, I heard what lived beneath Julian’s arrogance.

Fear.

Not fear for me.

Not fear for either unborn child.

Fear of becoming worthless to Arthur.

“You brought Chloe to the shower because you thought a son would protect you,” I said.

Silence.

“She told them?”

“She told the truth.”

“You have no idea how easily she lies.”

“You told everyone she carried the future.”

“That was before.”

“Before you learned she would not take the blame?”

His breathing sharpened.

“You think you’re different from her?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“I stopped believing you.”

I ended the call and sent the number to Miriam.

That evening, Chloe’s attorney delivered a request.

Chloe wanted to meet me.

Miriam advised against it.

Agent Torres said any contact would have to occur with attorneys present and could not involve details of the federal case.

I should have refused.

Instead, I agreed.

There was one question only Chloe could answer.

I wanted to know whether Julian had ever loved either of us—or whether we had merely served different parts of the same plan.
