Chapter 5 - THE THREE EXITS

The major twist was not that Lucas had a mistress.

It was not that Diane and Aaron helped him create a fake assignment.

It was that Lucas intended to betray his accomplices after they helped him betray me.

Forensic review of his cloud accounts uncovered three sets of departure plans.

The first was mine.

Zurich would keep me waiting, emotionally attached, and unlikely to review our finances closely while he transferred the reserve funds.

The second belonged to Melanie.

Palm Springs would keep her invested in the development and dependent on his promises until their son was born.

The third belonged to his family.

Vancouver would place Lucas beyond the immediate collapse of Alpine Horizon. The Canadian account would hold enough money for him to begin again while Diane, Aaron, Richard, Melanie, and I argued over responsibility.

Three exits.

One for every life he intended to leave behind.

The plan had developed gradually.

At first, Lucas and Diane wanted only enough money to prevent Aaron’s bankruptcy.

Then the development grew.

Lucas began imagining the independence he believed my wealth denied him.

He resented that our largest assets could be traced to my inheritance and premarital investments. He wanted success no one could describe as belonging to his wife.

Rather than risk his own resources, he used mine.

Melanie represented another version of himself.

With her, he was not Claire Walker’s husband or the son expected to rescue his brother. He was a developer building a new life in California.

Then Melanie became pregnant.

Instead of abandoning the plan, Lucas added another escape.

His lies did not replace one another.

They accumulated.

Investigators recovered a message he sent Aaron six months earlier.

Once the reserve clears, everyone gets breathing room.

Aaron replied:

Including Claire?

Lucas answered:

She’ll be fine. She always is.

That sentence affected me more than the affair messages.

He had built his decisions around the belief that I could absorb any damage.

I earned well.

I managed money carefully.

I remained calm during crises.

Therefore, taking from me seemed less destructive than allowing his family to fail.

Strength became the excuse for sacrificing me.

Melanie provided a sworn statement and returned the keys to the Palm Springs condominium. Her $60,000 investment was added to the fraud claims.

She did not ask me for friendship.

I did not offer it.

The only honest relationship between us was accountability.

My employer completed its preliminary review and confirmed that I had not disclosed Alpine Horizon because I had never known I was associated with it. I remained on leave while law enforcement investigated the forged filings.

The company promised my position would remain open.

The executive promotion I had been considered for went to another director.

No one said the scandal was the reason.

No one needed to.

Preventing the theft did not prevent every loss.

At home, the absence of Lucas changed the sound of each room.

His coffee mug remained in the cabinet.

His running shoes were still beside the garage door.

A photograph from our tenth anniversary sat on the mantel, taken weeks before he signed the Palm Springs lease.

I did not destroy the photograph.

Real betrayal is difficult partly because the loving moments do not automatically become false.

Lucas had loved me.

He had also decided loving me did not require my consent.

The court placed the $720,000 into protected escrow pending full accounting. Lucas received credit for legitimate contributions. I could not spend the disputed balance, nor could he access it.

The lender received notice that my guarantee was contested.

Contractors began filing liens against the development.

Aaron’s company prepared for bankruptcy.

Diane listed her house for sale.

Every consequence made the Walkers insist more urgently that I return the money and allow the project to continue.

They still described protection as destruction whenever the person being protected was me.

Lucas requested mediation.

I agreed.

May you like

Not to save the marriage.

To hear him explain which future he believed had ever included me.
