Chapter 11 - THE MILLION DOLLARS DID NOT FIX MY MARRIAGE
My instinct was simple.
Move Paige somewhere safe.
Pay every medical bill.
Fix the credit.
Destroy Greg financially.
Cut Susan off.
Become the husband I should have been.
Paige stopped me.
“You don't get to become the boss because your mother was the bad boss.”
That hurt.
Because she was right.
For four years I had made a fundamental mistake.
I treated earning money as the same thing as taking care of my marriage.
I worked.
Sent transfers.
Survived loneliness.
Built a future.
And outsourced the present to my mother.
I called Paige, yes.
But when conversations became difficult, I accepted Susan’s explanation.
Paige is tired.
Paige is emotional.
Paige doesn't understand the finances.
You focus on work.
I liked those answers because they let me keep working.
My scars and twelve-hour shifts were real.
So was my absence.
“I thought I was sacrificing for us.”
Paige looked at me.
“You were.”
Then:
“But you let Susan decide what ‘us’ meant.”
That sentence became mine to carry.
We started marriage counseling.
Not because Paige owed me reconciliation.
Because we needed to learn whether there was still a marriage worth rebuilding.
She moved temporarily into a small apartment near her oncology center.
I wanted her home.
She said no.
The house still smelled like Susan.
The shed was visible from the bedroom.
She needed somewhere no Cole family member had ever held a key.
I paid rent only after we agreed in writing and therapy that paying did not give me control.
That felt ridiculous.
Then necessary.
Abuse leaves strange legal grammar behind.
The million-dollar settlement existed.
After fees and obligations, far less than one million would become freely spendable.
I placed no money into a family account.
Greg received nothing.
Susan received nothing.
Paige’s treatment and financial repair were handled transparently with professionals.
