Chapter 13 - Margaret Met the Boys Once

Margaret did not meet them because she demanded it.

She tried that.

Claire refused.

Then Margaret sent three birthday cards.

No money.

No trust documents.

No invitations.

Just cards.

Claire gave them to Dr. Walsh.

Eventually the boys asked who Margaret was.

We told them.

My mother.

Their grandmother.

The adult who had known about them and had not told me.

Age-appropriate truth.

Miles asked:

“Did she not like babies?”

I nearly laughed.

Claire said:

“It wasn't because of you.”

Important.

Children convert adult wrongdoing into evidence about themselves frighteningly fast.

Months later, Noah asked to meet her.

Daniel agreed.

Miles said:

“Only if Mom comes.”

Margaret met them in Dr. Walsh's office.

No Whitmore estate.

No gifts.

She cried immediately.

Noah looked uncomfortable.

Daniel stared at the floor.

Miles asked:

“Why are you crying?”

Margaret wiped her face.

“Because I'm happy to meet you.”

He considered that.

“Mom says happy crying is weird.”

Claire almost smiled.

Then Noah asked the difficult question.

“Did you know us when we were babies?”

Margaret looked at Claire.

Claire said nothing.

I said nothing.

This was hers.

“Yes.”

“Did you see us?”

“Pictures.”

“Why didn't Ethan?”

Margaret's hands shook.

“Because I made a terrible decision.”

Noah frowned.

“Why?”

She could have said:

Company.

Stress.

Your father.

Your mother.

Instead:

“I thought I knew what was best for everyone.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Did you?”

“No.”

One syllable.

Perhaps the most useful thing my mother had said in decades.

The boys did not hug her when they left.

Margaret did not ask them to.

That mattered too.

Whether they would ever build a grandmother-grandson relationship remained uncertain.

But I refused to make that the story's final unanswered question.

There was a larger one still sitting between Claire and me.
