Chapter 4 - THE BROTHER OUR FATHER LEFT OUTSIDE

Lucas’s mother had worked as a bookkeeper for our father’s roofing company in the late 1980s.

The relationship lasted less than a year.

Lucas was born seven months after our father ended it.

“He sent money sometimes,” Lucas said. “Cash orders. No return address. My mother kept every envelope.”

“Did our mother know?”

“I think so.”

He handed me the letter.

Our father had written it when Lucas was eighteen but never mailed it. In it, he admitted paternity and explained that revealing the truth would “destroy two households.”

Even in confession, he had made himself the victim.

“How did Daniel find you?”

“A DNA site.”

Daniel had taken a test three years earlier after Emma’s second miscarriage. Lucas had already uploaded his results while searching for medical history.

The match appeared as immediate family.

Daniel contacted him privately.

“At first, he wanted answers,” Lucas said. “Then he wanted something else.”

“A donor.”

Lucas nodded.

“He said Emma wanted a child and he couldn’t give her one. He said using me would mean the baby still came from your father’s bloodline.”

The wording made my skin crawl.

“Did Emma know you were related?”

“No.”

I looked at him sharply.

“She knew I was Daniel’s old friend,” Lucas said. “She knew I’d agreed to donate. Daniel told her we’d met through a support group.”

“Why would you agree?”

Lucas leaned against the desk.

“Because I spent my entire life knowing your father chose you two. Daniel was the first person from that family who asked me to belong to something.”

There was no self-pity in his voice.

That made it worse.

Daniel had promised Lucas a recognized place in the child’s life—not as a father, but as an uncle and godparent. In exchange, Lucas agreed to medical testing and several private insemination attempts.

The eighteen thousand dollars was not payment for the baby.

Daniel’s company had damaged a customer’s vintage car during a renovation accident. Lucas repaired it quietly to prevent an insurance investigation that might have shut Daniel’s business down.

“Daniel said Rachel had agreed to invest,” Lucas said.

“I agreed to pay for IVF.”

His mouth tightened.

“So he lied to both of us.”

“What changed after Emma got pregnant?”

“Daniel stopped answering me.”

Lucas had been excluded from the baby shower. He was told not to contact Emma directly. When he threatened to reveal their biological relationship, Daniel warned that no one would believe a man asking for access to another couple’s baby.

“Why did you sign the paternity form?”

“Emma called me last week.”

That stopped me.

“She found one of Daniel’s old emails. She knew there was no clinic agreement, and she was scared he’d lied about more than the money.”

“Did she ask you to claim the baby?”

“She asked me to come to the hospital after delivery so we could all speak with a social worker. Daniel got there first.”

Lucas had arrived shortly after the birth. He held the baby once while Emma slept and Daniel spoke with a doctor.

Nurse Claire had seen him carrying the infant back from the nursery after a blood test.

Later, when Lucas refused to leave without clarification, Daniel called security and described him as an unstable acquaintance.

The hospital removed Lucas from the maternity floor.

Before leaving, he signed the acknowledgment of paternity at the records office.

“He wanted me gone before you arrived,” Lucas said.

That explained Claire’s whispered warning.

She had seen one man listed as the biological father carrying the baby.

Then she had watched another family celebrate Daniel.

Lucas opened a drawer and handed me printed emails.

The messages showed Daniel making promises, revising them, and eventually denying he had made them at all.

One line appeared repeatedly:

This child will connect all of us.

In the final email, sent two months before the birth, Daniel wrote:

Once the baby is here, your part is finished. Emma never needs to know who you really are.

I folded the pages.

“Why didn’t you tell her sooner?”

“Because I wanted to believe he’d keep one promise.”

My phone rang.

Emma’s name appeared on the screen.

When I answered, she was crying.

“Rachel, Daniel came back. He says Lucas is dangerous.”

“He isn’t.”

Daniel’s voice rose in the background.

Emma whispered, “He wants me to sign new paperwork before the hospital attorney comes tomorrow.”

“What paperwork?”

“A statement saying Lucas deceived us about his intentions.”

Lucas watched my face.

“Don’t sign anything,” I said.

Daniel took the phone from her.

“You have no idea what you’re interfering with.”

“I’m standing beside Lucas.”

Daniel stopped breathing for a moment.

Then his voice became very calm.

“Ask him why he really wanted this baby.”

Lucas looked away.

My brother had lied about almost everything.

But the fear on Lucas’s face told me Daniel had finally asked a question with an answer I had not heard.
