Chapter 11 - I Was Angry at the Wrong Ghosts

Knowing my mother was alive did not repair eleven years.

For two months, I saw Elena only in Marcus’s office.

Neutral room.

One hour.

No surprise visits.

No key to my house.

No right to call because she suddenly wanted to.

She accepted every condition.

That made it harder to hate her cleanly.

I asked questions.

“Did you see pictures of me?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Teresa’s public posts. Later your wedding announcement.”

“You saw me marry Alejandro.”

“Yes.”

“Why not call anonymously?”

Elena looked at her hands.

“I convinced myself warning Marina was safer than contacting you directly.”

“You convinced yourself.”

“Yes.”

That phrase had become poison in my life.

Alejandro convinced himself stealing Marina’s property interest was solving a problem.

Carmen convinced herself vulnerable women needed management.

Elena convinced herself disappearing protected me.

I had spent years convincing myself Alejandro’s contempt was stress.

Everybody had explanations.

Consequences remained.

Meanwhile, Marina’s testimony changed the old financial cases.

Isabel’s estate obtained counsel.

Lucille Garcia requested an independent review of her past transactions with Carmen.

Not every claim succeeded.

Not every transfer was reversed.

Records were old.

Some limitations issues mattered.

Some signatures were genuine.

Reality refused to become a clean scoreboard.

My own deed was easier.

The forged document had never been recorded successfully.

I still owned my house.

Marcus obtained court orders preventing any transfer while the litigation continued.

Alejandro moved out permanently.

The marital-status investigation eventually confirmed that his supposed foreign divorce from Marina was invalid under circumstances relevant to Texas recognition.

Which meant our marriage might never have been legally valid in the way both of us believed.

My attorney pursued the appropriate declaratory and property relief rather than pretending eight years of shared life had vanished.

Alejandro also lost his job after his employer investigated undisclosed identity discrepancies and expense issues connected to his travel.

His affair with Sofia ended almost immediately.

I felt nothing.

That surprised me.

The betrayal that once would have destroyed me had been swallowed by larger truths.

Then Alejandro requested one final personal conversation.

I almost refused.

Marcus asked:

“What would you want from it?”

“An answer.”

“To which question?”

“Why he stayed.”

That question mattered.

Not legally.

Personally.

So I agreed.

One hour.

Attorneys nearby.

No Carmen.

I entered the room prepared to meet a monster.

May you like

Instead I met the same weak, charming man I had slept beside for eight years.

That was worse.
