Chapter 14 - I Kept Working Nights

Margaret’s entire mythology depended on one premise:

A good mother is physically available at the hours she considered proper.

I refused to let that become the final lesson.

I kept working emergency medicine.

Not three night shifts every week forever.

My schedule changed as Roger’s needs changed.

I moved into a mixed rotation with more weekend coverage and some nights because that was what worked for our family.

We built childcare around reality instead of shame.

Roger had dinner with me before shifts.

My friend Keisha sometimes stayed overnight.

My father-in-law was not involved.

My sister was not automatically trusted because we shared blood.

Support became something chosen carefully.

One evening before work, Roger asked:

“Do you sleep all day because you’re lazy?”

I froze.

Someone had given him that language before.

I sat beside him.

“No. When Mommy works while you sleep, Mommy has to sleep while other people are awake.”

“Oh.”

“That doesn’t mean I love you less.”

“I know.”

Children often understand simple truth faster than adults committed to complicated lies.

He hugged me.

“Save somebody tonight.”

“I’ll try.”

That sentence followed me through the hospital doors.

For years Gideon turned my work into evidence against me.

Now I stopped treating my profession like something requiring apology.

I saved lives at two in the morning.

I came home exhausted.

I slept.

I mothered my son.

None of those truths canceled another.
