Chapter 2 - The Stolen Life

The glowing screen of my laptop illuminated Emily’s exhausted face as we watched three days of footage unfold in fast-forward.

At 9:00 AM on December 29th, my mother and sister unlocked the front door. Emily had been asleep in the bedroom, recovering from a severe infection tied to her emergency C-section. On the screen, Diane and Claire didn't move like people checking in on a loved one. They moved like a demolition crew.

Claire directed two men in work shirts to haul away the television, the dining chairs, and the nursery furniture. My mother walked straight to the kitchen drawer and pocketed the emergency debit cards I had left for Emily.

I paused the video and zoomed in on my mother’s hands. She was holding a tablet.

“That’s my old iPad,” I said, the realization settling like a stone in my gut. “The one I left in her basement storage unit three years ago.”

“She brought it into the bedroom,” Emily murmured, leaning heavily against my arm. “She shoved it in my face. It had your blue text bubbles. It said you were extending your contract, that you needed space from us, and that Diane was in charge of the assets.”

Because the iPad was still linked to my iCloud account, my mother could send iMessages that appeared to come directly from my phone number, seamlessly syncing into my active chat history. I had been in a strict no-phones security zone on the Dubai site for the last seventy-two hours. They knew I wouldn't see the notifications.

I hit play again. The microphone picked up the audio perfectly.

“Make sure you leave the trash bags on the floor,” Claire instructed one of the movers, pointing to the corner. “And take the baby formula. Leave a few empty beer bottles if you can find them.”

Diane stood by the front door, tapping away on the stolen iPad. “The social worker is scheduled for a welfare check on the second of January. This place needs to look like a junkie lives here.”

I slammed the laptop shut. They weren't just stealing my money. They were building a stage.
