Chapter 2 - THE TOOL FROM MY OWN FIREPLACE

The officer’s name was Detective Marcus Hale.

He did not react dramatically when I told him the poker belonged to Julian and me.

He simply asked:

“How certain are you?”

“Completely.”

“Anything distinctive?”

“The brass collar beneath the grip.”

I enlarged the photograph.

“My father-in-law repaired it himself when the original handle split. He used a piece from an old curtain rod because he refused to buy a new set.”

Hale wrote that down.

“Where is the rest of the fireplace set?”

“In my living room.”

“Would Mr. Bennett know you could identify this piece?”

“Yes.”

Then I corrected myself.

“He should.”

Maybe Julian had panicked.

Maybe he never expected police to photograph it closely.

Maybe he assumed a black iron rod looked like every other black iron rod.

People make strange mistakes when they need a story faster than they need a good one.

My mother was sitting in another room wrapped in a blanket.

One side of her face was purple near the cheekbone.

Her lower lip was split.

There were dark marks forming around her wrist.

She looked smaller than she had that morning.

Not physically.

Spiritually.

I crouched beside her.

“What did he want?”

She stared at Detective Hale.

Then at me.

“A signature.”

“On what?”

“I don’t know how to explain it yet.”

My anger rose.

“Try.”

“Not here.”

“Mom, Julian says you attacked him.”

“I know.”

“He brought a weapon from my house and left it beside you.”

She closed her eyes.

“I know.”

Something about that answer bothered me.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

“How?”

“He had it when he came.”

“Why?”

She shook her head.

“Valerie, please.”

There are moments when pressing someone for truth becomes another form of control.

I stopped.

“For now.”

She nodded.

At the hospital, doctors treated bruising, a shoulder strain, and a small cut near her scalp.

No catastrophic injuries.

Still real.

Julian had scratches on his forearm.

His attorney emphasized them immediately.

Self-defense.

A frightened man protecting himself from an agitated older woman.

Then the first 911 call was released to investigators.

Julian sounded breathless.

“My mother-in-law attacked me.”

Dispatcher:

“Is she armed?”

“Yes. Fireplace poker.”

Then:

“She’s been acting paranoid lately. She thinks I’m stealing from her.”

That sentence changed everything.

Because until that moment, nobody had told me there was money involved.
