Chapter 7 - The Painting in the Nursery

Police recovered Grace’s hidden records two days after the hospital incident.

I went with her attorney to the house.

Ezekiel was barred from entering under an emergency order.

Noah’s nursery looked almost finished.

Crib.

Blue curtains.

Stacked diapers.

The watercolor still hung beside the rocking chair.

I lifted it.

Nothing.

Then Grace’s attorney pressed the backing board.

A taped envelope fell out.

Inside:

Printed portal access logs.

Copies of the fake messages.

Screenshots of Ezekiel’s texts.

A handwritten timeline.

And one page addressed to me.

MOM—

If Ezekiel tells you I had a breakdown, ask whether I said it myself.

I sat on the nursery floor.

The next line hurt more.

Please don’t tell me marriage is compromise again.

I cried so hard Grace’s attorney eventually sat beside me without speaking.

The packet also contained evidence that Ezekiel repeatedly accessed Grace’s phone while she slept.

Face ID failed.

He knew the passcode.

At least three fake portal messages were sent from the Mercer home network when Grace’s work calendar showed her physically at another location.

Technical evidence did not prove every message.

It proved enough to challenge the narrative.

Then came the document Grace had mentioned.

Her new healthcare power of attorney.

Signed thirteen days before delivery.

Primary agent if she lacked capacity:

BERNICE HOLLOWAY.

Alternate:

Grace’s sister-in-law, Dana.

Ezekiel removed entirely.

The hospital’s copy had never reached the active electronic chart.

Grace had given a paper copy to Ezekiel.

“I need this scanned before the delivery.”

He told her he handled it.

He did not.

Police found the envelope unopened inside his office drawer.

That was when Grace’s attorney said something that changed the investigation.

“If Ezekiel knew Bernice was the new agent, then telling Bernice Grace was dead wasn’t just cruelty.”

I looked up.

“What was it?”

“Delay.”

Delay what?

Nobody knew yet.

Then the attorney found another file in Ezekiel’s email.

A psychiatric facility intake packet.

Scheduled transfer window:

6:30 a.m. the morning after Noah’s birth.
