Chapter 12 - Khloe Finally Stopped Being Fragile

Khloe testified truthfully during the hospital and transaction reviews.
That mattered.
It did not make us friends.
She admitted the affair.
Admitted knowing about the trust.
Admitted helping Margaret manage my access to certain family discussions.
Then she said:
“I spent my whole life learning that being vulnerable kept people close.”
I looked at her.
“Caleb?”
“Everyone.”
Her parents became hyperprotective after her childhood cardiac diagnosis.
Margaret treated her like another daughter.
Caleb learned early that Khloe in distress meant everything stopped.
Over time, Khloe learned it too.
Not consciously at first.
Then consciously.
“I knew he would come if I called.”
“So you called.”
“Yes.”
“Even after he married me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Her eyes filled.
“Because every time he came, it proved I still mattered.”
The answer disgusted me.
It also sounded honest.
Then I asked:
“Did you fake heart symptoms?”
“Sometimes I exaggerated them.”
My stomach turned.
“At our wedding?”
She looked away.
“Yes.”
“Honeymoon?”
“Yes.”
“Hospital?”
“No.”
“The crash frightened me. I thought my heart was racing abnormally.”
“Were you having a cardiac event?”
“No.”
“And when the doctor told Caleb I was bleeding?”
Khloe began crying.
“I should have told him to leave.”
“You did.”
“Not hard enough.”
That distinction mattered too.
Khloe did say:
Go to Lucia.
Then held him.
Then accepted him staying.
People like us had spent years mastering technically defensible behavior.
Finally I said:
“I don't need you to be fragile anymore.”
She looked confused.
May you like
“I don't need anything from you.”
That was the first boundary she understood without competition.
