Chapter 4 - The Hidden Vault

Lenora stood up so fast her chair screeched against the floor, marching into the hallway with her chin raised. “What is the meaning of this? Who let you into this house? This is private property—”
“Shut up, Lenora,” Mara said, her voice cutting through the morning air like a scalpel. She didn't even look at her former in-laws; she walked straight past them into the kitchen, dropping to her knees beside me.
“Claire,” Mara whispered, tears spilling over her lashes as she brushed my hair back. “I’m here. We’re getting you out.”
Dr. Hayes knelt on my other side, sliding a blood pressure cuff onto my arm while checking my pulse. “Contractions are two minutes apart. We need to move her right now. The baby is coming.”
“You can’t take her anywhere,” Adrian shouted, rushing into the kitchen with his father right behind him. “This is my wife! You’re trespassing! I’ll have you all arrested!”
Julian didn't blink. He pulled a folded legal document from his breast pocket and tossed it onto the kitchen island, right next to the unbaked biscuits.
“Federal asset freeze and immediate protective custody order, signed by Judge Thomas,” Julian recited smoothly. “It covers Claire, the child, and every single financial account tied to Adrian Vance and his parents, including the four hundred thousand dollars funneled from the pediatric foundation last Tuesday.”
Adrian’s face went chalk white. The arrogant, untouchable mask shattered completely. “That’s... that’s a lie. You fabricated those documents.”
“Did I?” Julian walked over to the kitchen refrigerator, popped open the decorative magnetic panel on the side, and pressed a small toggle switch hidden beneath the casing.
A hidden wall panel behind the pantry popped open with a soft click, revealing a digital safe and a stack of manila folders.
Adrian lunged forward like a cornered animal. “Don’t touch that!”
But Julian was already spinning the dial, pulling out a thick stack of printed bank statements, photocopied passports under fake names, and—most damning of all—a typewritten medical log detailing the exact dosages of heavy sedatives found in his first wife’s toxicology report.

Lenora gasped, staggering back against the counter. “Adrian... what is that?”
