Chapter 3 - The Leverage

I was discharged to my corporate penthouse in Back Bay two days later. The transition was jarring—from a carefully curated suburban illusion to four thousand square feet of marble, glass, and silence. Night nurses tended to the twins in a temporary nursery while I sat at a massive mahogany dining table, staring at a stack of legal documents Lena had printed.

Denise hadn't just discovered my identity; she had weaponized it.

“She didn't tell Daniel the whole truth,” I said, piecing together the timeline. I looked up at Lena, who was pouring black coffee. “If Daniel knew I was the CEO, he would have spent the last ten days begging on his knees. He wouldn't have called me a jobless burden.”

“Correct,” Lena said. “We intercepted Daniel’s communications with his divorce attorney this morning. Denise told Daniel that she found hidden bank statements. She convinced him that you were secretly a trust-fund baby hoarding millions while letting him drown in corporate pressure.”

“So why kick me out?” I traced the edge of a pediatric bill. “Why push me into the snow without my phone?”

“Because in Massachusetts, child support and alimony are heavily influenced by the status quo of custody,” Lena said grimly. “Denise pushed him to provoke you. If you snapped, if you abandoned the house, or if the police found you wandering the streets in a post-partum panic, Daniel could file for emergency sole custody. And with sole custody of the children of a secret heiress...”

“He could demand astronomical child support,” I finished, my stomach turning over. “They weren't throwing me away. They were trying to break me so they could keep the children and farm me for cash.”

The betrayal was so deep it felt structural, like a foundational beam in my chest had snapped. Daniel was weak, entitled, and easily manipulated by his mother, but he was still the man who had rubbed my back during twenty hours of labor. He had looked at Noah and wept. How could he risk his son's life in the freezing cold just to secure a paycheck?

My laptop chimed. It was an email from Daniel, sent to my old 'Mara Cole' Gmail account.

*Mara, I am willing to let you see the kids this weekend, supervised. My lawyer has sent the temporary custody paperwork to your sister's house. Sign it, or I will tell the judge about your erratic behavior.*

He still didn't know he was locked out of the Brookline house. He thought I was hiding at a relative's apartment.

I closed the laptop. “Lena,” I said. “Unfreeze Daniel’s corporate email. Tell HR to summon him to the Vale Meridian regional headquarters tomorrow at noon for a mandatory executive review regarding his division's performance.”

“And Denise?”

“Tell his assistant he’s allowed to bring legal counsel or a family advocate,” I said, standing up. “Denise won't let him go alone. Not when she thinks she’s holding all the cards.”
