Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN I WANTED TO BLAME

Rachel told me not to answer Vanessa.

I answered Vanessa.

Not because I was reckless.

Because for six months, I had built a version of my marriage in which one woman whispered poison and one weak man swallowed it.

That version let me hate Vanessa more cleanly than I hated Daniel.

Her message threatened to take even that away.

I typed:

PROVE IT.

Three dots appeared.

Disappeared.

Appeared again.

Then:

NOT OVER TEXT.

I called Rachel.

She said exactly what I knew she would say.

“No.”

“She claims Daniel wrote the anonymous messages.”

“No.”

“I need to hear what she knows.”

“You need to stay alive long enough to use what she knows.”

“I’m not meeting her alone.”

“You’re not meeting her at all.”

“Rachel.”

“No, Evelyn. She participated in forging your signature. She stood in your kitchen while Daniel assaulted you. She is not a confidential informant in a movie. She is a woman with her own exposure who may be trying to manipulate you.”

I paced the guest bedroom.

“Then we arrange it through counsel.”

Silence.

“That,” Rachel said, “is a different sentence.”

Vanessa refused to speak with Rachel directly.

She agreed to speak through her own attorney.

By the following afternoon, we were seated in separate rooms at a small mediation suite in SouthPark.

Vanessa’s attorney was a criminal defense lawyer named Leonard Price.

That told me she understood the stakes.

I watched through a video feed from another conference room.

Vanessa wore a cream blouse buttoned to her throat.

No silk robe.

No wine.

No smirk.

I hated that she looked ordinary.

Leonard said, “My client is willing to provide limited information as part of preliminary settlement discussions. Nothing said here constitutes a waiver of rights.”

Rachel replied, “Understood.”

Vanessa looked directly into the camera.

“Is Evelyn watching?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

She swallowed.

“I’m not going to pretend I’m sorry enough to make her feel better.”

My fingernails pressed into my palms.

“I knew he was married. I slept with him anyway. I sent things that I knew would hurt her. I enjoyed making her feel like she was losing.”

Rachel said, “Why?”

Vanessa gave a small, humorless laugh.

“Because Daniel told me she controlled everything.”

I almost spoke to the screen.

“He said every house had her taste. Every banker asked for her. Every major client wanted her at dinner. He said Victor Hale treated him like an employee who had married into the family.”

My father had not come.

I was grateful.

Vanessa continued.

“He told me Evelyn didn’t love him. She managed him.”

Rachel asked, “Did you believe that?”

“Yes.”

“And now?”

Vanessa looked away.

“Now I think he tells everybody the version of the truth that makes them useful.”

That sentence landed.

Rachel leaned forward.

“The anonymous messages.”

Vanessa rubbed her thumb against her index finger.

“He wrote the first one.”

“What did it say?”

“That Evelyn had been seen having lunch with a former project manager.”

“Was it true?”

“I don’t know.”

“Who sent it?”

“He bought a prepaid phone. I sent it.”

“Why?”

“He wanted to see how she reacted.”

My stomach turned.

“And the other messages?” Rachel asked.

“Most were his wording.”

“How many?”

“I don’t know. Twelve. Fifteen.”

“Why different numbers?”

“Burner apps. Prepaid phones.”

“Did he explain why?”

Vanessa’s shoulders lifted slightly.

“He said he needed her off balance.”

Rachel waited.

“Those were his words?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“February.”

A month after Arbor Ridge approached him.

I stood and walked to the window.

Traffic moved along Fairview Road below us.

People went to Target.

Picked up kids.

Bought groceries.

Ordinary life continued six floors beneath the room where my marriage was being translated into evidence.

Rachel said, “What did he want her to do?”

“Sign papers.”

“Which papers?”

“At first, he said estate documents. Later he said ownership documents.”

“Did he tell you she still owned twenty-eight percent?”

Vanessa nodded.

“He said it was symbolic.”

I laughed aloud.

Nobody in the other room could hear me.

Rachel asked, “Did you impersonate Evelyn for a notary?”

Vanessa stopped rubbing her fingers.

Her attorney leaned toward her.

“You don’t have to answer that.”

She stared at the camera.

“I wore sunglasses.”

Leonard closed his eyes.

“You’re done answering questions about that.”

Rachel’s expression remained neutral.

“Then we’ll move on.”

Vanessa said, “No.”

Her lawyer looked at her.

“Vanessa.”

“I’m already in it.”

She leaned forward.

“Daniel gave me Evelyn’s old license. He said the document just formalized something she had already agreed to.”

“Did you believe him?”

“I wanted to.”

That was the first thing she said that sounded completely true.

Rachel asked, “Why contact Evelyn now?”

Vanessa laughed again, but her eyes were wet.

“Because Daniel told me yesterday that if the deal collapsed, I had acted alone.”

There it was.

Alliance born from self-preservation.

Not redemption.

Good.

I could work with that.

“What evidence do you have?” Rachel asked.

“Some messages.”

“Screenshots?”

“No.”

“What?”

“He used my company laptop sometimes.”

My attention sharpened.

“For what?”

“Drafting things. Emails. Text language. He didn’t want certain things on his devices.”

“Do you still have the laptop?”

“No. IT collected it this morning.”

I turned toward Rachel’s camera.

She saw my expression.

Mercer Development had the machine.

Possibly Daniel had it.

Vanessa continued.

“But before they took it, I copied my personal folder.”

Leonard put his hand over his face.

“Vanessa.”

“What’s in the folder?” Rachel asked.

“Notes. Screenshots. A few drafts.”

“Where is it?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“In cloud storage.”

“Preserve it.”

“I already did.”

Rachel’s voice sharpened.

“Do not alter anything.”

“I won’t.”

Vanessa looked into the camera again.

Then she said something that made me sit down.

“The messages weren’t the worst part.”

Rachel waited.

Vanessa’s mouth trembled.

“Daniel kept a list.”

“What kind of list?”

“Dates Evelyn refused to sign things.”

My breath stopped.

“What else?” Rachel asked.

May you like

Vanessa looked away.

“What happened to her afterward.”
