Chapter 5 - THE FIRST PERSON WHO TURNED ON VANESSA

Vanessa’s father cracked first.
Not publicly.
Through lawyers.
Richard Cross requested a proffer meeting with prosecutors.
He wanted protection for cooperation.
Ethan wanted to call him a coward.
Margaret stopped him.
“Let him talk.”
Richard admitted Cross Family Holdings paid Pine Hollow.
“How much?”
“Approximately seven hundred thousand dollars over two years.”
Claire went pale.
“For keeping me there?”
Richard looked down.
“I was told it was private psychiatric care.”
“By whom?”
“Vanessa.”
Ethan stared.
Richard continued.
“She said Claire had attempted suicide.”
Claire laughed once.
“And nobody called my husband?”
Richard looked at Ethan.
“Vanessa said Ethan was the reason.”
The room changed.
“What?”
Ethan’s voice went flat.
“She said Claire believed you would use your money to take Noah.”
Claire looked at Ethan.
Again, a real fear made false.
They had fought once about custody.
During an argument six months before the crash, Claire had threatened to take Noah to her sister’s in Oregon for a week.
Ethan said:
“If you disappear with my son, I’ll use every lawyer I have.”
He regretted it immediately.
Apparently Vanessa knew.
Claire whispered:
“I told her.”
There it was.
“Why?”
“She asked why I was upset.”
Vanessa collected vulnerabilities and later converted them into evidence.
Richard continued.
“I believed she was arranging treatment Claire had requested privately.”
“For two years?”
“I thought the initial confinement was temporary.”
“When did you realize otherwise?” Margaret asked.
Richard did not answer.
“That is the question that matters.”
“About eight months in.”
Claire stared.
“And what did you do?”
“Nothing.”
Honest.
Ugly.
“Why?”
“My daughter said Claire’s memory was improving and she would expose the clinic.”
Ethan’s hands tightened.
“So you kept paying.”
“Yes.”
“To protect Vanessa.”
Richard swallowed.
“Yes.”
First major power shift.
Vanessa was no longer protected by the man funding the operation.
But Richard’s confession raised another question.
“What did Vanessa think Claire would expose?”
Richard looked at Claire.
“She said the accident was not supposed to happen.”
Silence.
Ethan leaned forward.
“What does that mean?”
“I don’t know.”
“Wrong answer.”
“I swear.”
Richard’s voice broke.
“She told me the plan was to get Claire away from Ethan temporarily.”
Claire’s face drained.
“What plan?”
“To make her leave.”
Ethan stared.
“Why?”
Richard looked at him.
“Because Vanessa wanted your marriage to end.”
There it was.
Simple.
Too simple.
Margaret asked:
“How?”
Richard described something smaller than kidnapping.
Vanessa had spent months undermining Claire.
Feeding Ethan complaints.
Feeding Claire suspicions.
Telling each that the other confided in her.
Claire remembered.
“Vanessa told me Ethan thought I was unstable.”
Ethan looked at her.
“She told me you were considering divorce.”
Claire stared.
“I wasn’t.”
“Neither was I.”
Vanessa had created the appearance of a marriage collapsing.
But why?
Richard answered partly.
“She was in love with Ethan.”
Ethan flinched.
Claire did not.
She had already guessed.
“What happened the night of the crash?”
Richard said:
“Vanessa hired someone to follow Claire.”
“Who?”
“A private investigator.”
“Name?”
“Paul Breen.”
Police knew him.
Former sheriff’s deputy.
License revoked after evidence-tampering complaints.
Richard continued.
“Breen was supposed to confront Claire with photographs.”
“Of what?”
Ethan asked.
Richard looked at him.
“You.”
“What about me?”
“Vanessa paid a woman to meet you at the Crawford Hotel.”
Ethan’s memory hit immediately.
A development consultant named Ashley.
She met him in the lobby for a late drink during negotiations.
Photographs could make it look intimate.
It had not been.
Claire stared.
“That night.”
“Yes.”
“You came home at two.”
“I told you why.”
“You told me business.”
“It was.”
She looked sick.
Vanessa intended Breen to show Claire photographs and suggest Ethan was having an affair.
Then encourage Claire to drive to a mountain cabin where Vanessa would meet her privately.
Vanessa’s original plan?
Push Claire into leaving Ethan long enough for separation to begin.
Manipulative.
Cruel.
Not kidnapping.
Then the storm came.
Claire’s car left the road.
Richard claimed Vanessa panicked.
Breen found Claire alive.
Head injured.
Disoriented.
Vanessa made the decision that transformed one scheme into something monstrous.
Instead of calling 911 under Claire’s real name, Breen transported her to Caldwell.
Caldwell had previously prepared psychiatric records to support the claim Claire was unstable.
The fake Anna Mercer identity already existed as contingency.
Claire whispered:
“She didn’t plan my crash.”
Richard shook his head.
“Not according to what she told me.”
Ethan’s stomach turned.
That made Vanessa worse in a different way.
She saw an accident and recognized opportunity.
Margaret asked:
“Why prepare Anna Mercer before the accident?”
Richard’s face tightened.
“I don’t know.”
Nobody believed him.
Then prosecutors showed him an email already recovered from Vanessa’s computer.
Dated two weeks before the crash.
To Richard:
If she refuses to leave willingly, we may need Plan M for a short period.
Richard stared at the screen.
Claire whispered:
“What is Plan M?”
Richard closed his eyes.
Then said:
“Memory.”
The false identity and psychiatrist had existed before the crash.
May you like
The accident did not create the plan.
It merely gave Vanessa a cleaner way to use it.
