Chapter 9 - THE ENVELOPE MY FATHER WROTE BEFORE I MET NATHAN

A year after the rescue, Rebecca called me.
“There’s something I didn’t tell you.”
I closed my eyes.
“About Dad?”
“In a way.”
She brought a sealed envelope.
My father’s handwriting.
Across the front:
TO MY DAUGHTER IF SHE EVER BECOMES FINANCIALLY INVOLVED WITH A HOLT
My hands shook.
The letter was written seventeen years before I met Nathan.
My father warned me never to sign Holt family documents without independent counsel.
Then one sentence stopped me:
CHARLES BELIEVES WHAT HE LOST TO ME SHOULD RETURN THROUGH THE NEXT GENERATION.
I looked at Rebecca.
“What did Charles lose?”
She did not answer immediately.
Instead, the conference-room door opened.
A woman in her late fifties stood outside.
Black coat.
Silver-streaked hair.
Nathan was coming down the hallway with counsel.
He saw her.
Stopped completely.
“No.”
The woman smiled.
“My name is Helen Holt.”
I stared.
“Holt?”
“Charles is my brother.”
Nathan shook his head.
“My father doesn’t have a sister.”
Helen looked at him.
“That is what he tells people.”
She placed an even older partnership agreement on the table.
HOLT PRECISION WORKS
Ownership:
Helen Holt — 50%.
Charles Holt — 50%.
“What happened to your half?” I asked.
“Charles moved company assets into the new business he later formed with your father.”
Rebecca nodded.
“That ownership problem is part of what Daniel eventually discovered.”
Helen had challenged the restructuring.
Charles told relatives she suffered a breakdown and left the country.
A familiar method.
Remove the person.
Control the story.
Let time make the story official.
I asked:
“What does that have to do with Nathan?”
Helen looked toward him.
“Everything.”
Then she placed a stock assignment in front of me.
Charles Holt transferring a block of disputed shares.
Recipient:
DANIEL ELLISON AS TRUSTEE
“Trustee for whom?”
Helen answered:
“For me.”
My father had not personally taken those shares.
He placed them into a dormant trust pending resolution of Helen’s claim.
When Daniel died, the trust was never properly wound down.
Then I saw the successor-trustee provision.
My own name.
Mara Ellison.
Added when I was still a child.
My mouth went dry.
“Did Nathan know?”
Helen opened another file.
Email.
Dated six months before Nathan and I first met.
From Nathan to Charles:
IS SHE THE SAME MARA NAMED IN DANIEL’S TRUST?
Charles:
YES.
Nathan:
DOES SHE KNOW?
Charles:
NO. KEEP IT THAT WAY.
I stared at the date.

My love story had started six months before I thought we met.
Just not for me.
