Chapter 2 - WHAT DANIEL SAID AT THE HOSPITAL

Daniel arrived at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital at 3:41 p.m.

Claire knew because she watched the clock.

Noah had pneumonia.

Not severe enough for intensive care, but serious enough that the pediatrician wanted him admitted overnight for IV fluids, antibiotics, and respiratory monitoring.

The earthquake had turned an already sick child into an emergency.

Claire sat beside his bed with an ice pack around her knee.

Robert stood at the window taking calls.

When Daniel entered, Vanessa was behind him on crutches.

Claire stared at both of them.

Daniel stopped.

“Claire.”

She looked at Vanessa's ankle.

A soft brace.

No cast.

No fracture.

Vanessa spoke first.

“I'm glad Noah's okay.”

Claire looked at her.

“Are you?”

Daniel stepped between them.

“Don't.”

Claire's eyebrows rose.

“Don't what?”

“Turn this into something it wasn't.”

Robert put down his phone.

“That sentence usually means it's exactly what it looked like.”

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Robert, stay out of my marriage.”

“My grandson was under a hotel while you rode away in an ambulance.”

“I thought they were being extracted.”

Claire stood.

Pain shot through her leg.

She ignored it.

“No, you didn't.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You had firefighters with you.”

“You told the ambulance crew Noah and I were already outside.”

His face changed.

Barely.

Claire saw it.

“I said rescue had reached you.”

“No.”

“Claire—”

“You said we were out.”

“I was trying to get Vanessa transported.”

“Why?”

Vanessa's voice sharpened.

“Because I couldn't walk.”

Robert stared at her brace.

“You sprained your ankle.”

“None of us knew that then.”

Claire turned to Daniel.

“You looked at Noah.”

“I know.”

“You heard him call you.”

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Can we do this privately?”

“No.”

“Claire.”

“Noah is asleep, and these are the people who watched what you chose.”

Vanessa shifted her weight.

“I'm going downstairs.”

Claire looked at Daniel.

“Did you sleep with her?”

Vanessa froze.

Daniel said nothing.

Robert turned away.

Not because he was surprised.

Because he suddenly looked as though hitting his son-in-law had become a practical possibility.

Claire continued.

“I'm asking once.”

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

Then at Claire.

“Yes.”

The word made the room quieter.

“How long?”

“This isn't the place.”

“How long?”

“Eight months.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Claire nodded.

Eight months.

Long enough to include Thanksgiving.

Christmas.

Noah's birthday.

The weekend Daniel claimed he was at a lender retreat in Phoenix.

Robert said, “Get out.”

Daniel ignored him.

“Claire, I was going to tell you.”

“When?”

Daniel looked at the hospital bed.

“Not like this.”

“Before or after you emptied the resilience fund?”

His eyes snapped back.

“What are you talking about?”

“The $4.8 million transfer.”

Vanessa gripped her crutches.

Daniel's reaction was smaller.

More controlled.

That mattered.

Claire saw it.

“You know exactly what I'm talking about.”

“I know Cinder Ridge was approved for acquisition work.”

“Not today.”

Daniel glanced at Robert.

“What did you do?”

Robert answered.

“I suspended your discretionary authority.”

Daniel stared.

“You can't do that.”

“I just did.”

“You're going to stop contractor payroll in the middle of an earthquake?”

“No. Payroll is being independently released.”

“You have no idea how Mercer Development operates.”

“I know how my fund operates.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“There it is.”

Claire frowned.

“What?”

“His fund.”

Daniel pointed toward Robert.

“His money. His rules. His daughter. His grandson. His helicopter.”

Robert's face remained still.

Daniel continued.

“Everything in my life eventually becomes something Robert Hale owns.”

Claire stared at him.

“Don't turn theft into a masculinity problem.”

“I didn't steal anything.”

“Then explain Cinder Ridge.”

“You created Cinder Ridge.”

“Ten years ago.”

“You gave Mercer permission to use emergency vehicles in the Northstar portfolio.”

“For rapid acquisitions during declared disasters.”

“Exactly.”

“There was no acquisition today.”

Daniel paused.

Claire stepped closer.

“What did we buy for $4.8 million?”

“I don't have the ledger in front of me.”

“You authorized it.”

“So did you.”

“I did not.”

Daniel's eyes hardened.

“Maybe you forgot.”

Claire laughed.

Vanessa looked away.

That was interesting.

Claire said, “I don't forget transfers over four million dollars.”

“You've signed hundreds of fund documents.”

“I haven't used Northstar credentials in six years.”

“Then talk to IT.”

“I will.”

Daniel rubbed his face.

“You're hurt. Noah's sick. We're all running on adrenaline.”

“You're right.”

His shoulders lowered slightly.

Then Claire said, “Which is why you should leave before you say something you'll need your attorney to explain.”

His face changed.

“Are you threatening me?”

“No.”

Claire pointed toward the door.

“I'm separating legal preservation from a family argument.”

Robert looked almost proud.

Claire ignored him.

Daniel stared at her.

“Don't let your father do this to us.”

Claire's voice dropped.

“You brought Vanessa into an ambulance while our son was trapped under concrete.”

Daniel glanced toward Noah's bed.

“He was with rescue.”

“You lied about that too.”

“I panicked.”

Finally.

Something human.

Not enough.

“I thought I could get Vanessa out and come back.”

“You didn't come back.”

“Road closures.”

“Your phone worked.”

Daniel stopped.

Claire continued.

“You didn't call.”

“I called the hotel.”

“You didn't call me.”

“You were trapped.”

“My phone was in my pocket.”

He stared at her.

“Get out,” Claire said.

Vanessa moved first.

Daniel followed her into the hallway.

At the door, he turned.

“Don't blow up a company with three hundred employees because you're angry at me.”

Claire met his eyes.

“If the company survives only because nobody checks the books, I won't be the one blowing it up.”

He left.

Robert waited until the elevator doors closed.

Then he said, “You knew about the affair.”

“I suspected.”

“The money?”

“I found irregular invoices three weeks ago.”

“And you didn't tell me.”

“I was collecting evidence.”

“Why?”

“Because if I accused Daniel too early, he'd destroy it.”

Robert stared.

“You were investigating your husband alone.”

“I was verifying.”

“You have a child with him.”

“I know.”

“You should've called me.”

Claire laughed without humor.

“That's your answer to everything.”

“Because I can help.”

“No. Because you like being the person everyone has to call.”

Robert's face tightened.

Before he could answer, Noah shifted in bed.

Both fell silent.

The pediatrician entered ten minutes later.

Noah's oxygen saturation had improved.

His fever was down to 101.8.

Claire almost cried from relief and hated herself for almost crying.

After the doctor left, Laura video-called from Hale Foundation headquarters.

“I have bank confirmation.”

Claire sat beside Noah.

“Go.”

“Cinder Ridge received the $4.8 million at 11:13.”

“Then?”

“Split three ways.”

Robert came closer.

“How much?”

“Two million to Sierra Emergency Logistics. Two-point-two to Northstar Strategic Holdings.”

Claire's stomach tightened.

“And the rest?”

Laura hesitated.

“Six hundred thousand into an education trust.”

Claire frowned.

“Whose?”

“Noah's.”

Robert stared.

Claire stood so quickly her knee protested.

“Noah doesn't have a trust outside my estate plan.”

“He does now.”

“Who opened it?”

“Daniel Mercer is listed as trustee.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Laura continued.

“The Northstar Strategic account is worse.”

“How?”

“It belongs to your old firm.”

“No. I dissolved Northstar.”

“The operating company was dissolved. This holding entity remained active.”

Claire remembered.

A dormant emergency acquisition vehicle.

Created when she was thirty-one.

Never used.

“Who has signing authority?”

Laura turned toward another screen.

“Daniel.”

“Who else?”

“You.”

Claire felt cold.

“I never added him.”

Laura said quietly, “The amendment carries your notarized signature.”

Claire looked toward the hallway where Daniel had disappeared.

“Send me the document.”

It arrived moments later.

She recognized her name.

Her old address.

The formatting.

The signature looked almost perfect.

Then she saw the notary block.

VANESSA COLE

California Notary Public.

Claire stared at it.

Robert read over her shoulder.

His voice became very quiet.

“His secretary notarized a document giving your husband control of your dormant company.”

Claire looked at the date.

Fourteen months earlier.

May you like

Six months before Daniel claimed the affair began.

And almost a year before Claire had discovered the first suspicious invoice.
