Chapter 13 - Ethan’s Hand

Ethan spent six weeks in the hospital and rehabilitation system before discharge.

He kept the hand.

That was the good news.

The honest version was more complicated.

Reduced grip strength.

Scar tissue.

Nerve symptoms in two fingers.

Months of occupational therapy.

Possible future surgery depending on growth and function.

The infection eventually cleared.

The bone healed.

His body had survived things it should never have needed to survive.

Kelly completed emergency kinship-placement approval and then longer-term review.

Ethan moved into her home in Wisconsin.

Not a perfect ending.

He missed Martha.

That confused people.

It should not have.

She was his mother.

The same woman who hurt him had also made pancakes, remembered birthdays, and sat beside him when he was sick before the abuse escalated.

Children can love dangerous parents.

The love is not evidence the danger was imaginary.

Kelly understood that.

She did not demand he hate Martha to prove loyalty.

She also did not minimize what happened.

Both mattered.

Ethan returned to school gradually.

Half days first.

Then full.

His teachers received only the information necessary to support him.

He did not become “the chained boy” in every adult conversation.

He became Ethan.

Liked astronomy.

Hated broccoli.

Good at fractions.

Terrible handwriting.

May you like

Obsessed with sharks.

That ordinariness was a victory.
