Chapter 14 - Walter's Library Stayed

The west-wing renovation was cancelled.
Not by me.
By the independent board, which no longer saw executive guest suites as an urgent capital priority.
Walter’s library remained.
Months later, Amelia asked whether I wanted anything from it before the mansion inventory changed.
I took one object.
Not silver.
Not art.
Walter’s old wooden pill organizer.
The ugly one I refilled every Sunday during his final years.
Amelia laughed.
“That's what you chose?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because it's actually part of my memory.”
Grant had been wrong.
I did not need ownership of the room to own what happened inside me there.
Jonathan visited the library once.
Only once.
He stood beside Walter’s chair.
“He should've told me sooner.”
“Yes.”
“He should've fought harder.”
“Yes.”
“He did try at the end.”
“Yes.”
Jonathan glanced at me.
“You don't defend dead people much.”
“They don't need me to.”
He smiled.
Then we removed the old sailing pin from Walter’s desk and put it in Jonathan’s hand.
No ceremony.
It belonged to him.
That evening, I walked upstairs to the former master bedroom.
The bed was gone.
The floor repaired.
The dirt cavity professionally documented and sealed during litigation.
Nothing remained beneath it.
I stood there for less than a minute.
Then left.

Some rooms do not require reclamation.
Only exit.
