Chapter 8 - THE CHOICE I COULDN’T UNMAKEFiling for divorce and full cooperation with the police were the irreversible decisions.

Moving back with Leah had been temporary shelter. Those filings made the separation real.
Dana warned me what it would cost.
Daniel would contest everything. He would try to frame my leaving as proof of instability. He would use the house, the baby, and every personal detail he knew to make ordinary fear look dramatic. He might even show up at work or church or the OB office to keep pressing the story.
All of that happened.
He filed a response asking for temporary exclusive possession of the marital residence “to preserve stability for the expected child.” He denied assault. He said I had staged the recording and exaggerated a “marital argument” because my sister wanted me to leave him.
Then he did something that revealed fear more than anger.
He filed an emergency motion asking the family court to order that the baby, upon birth, not be removed from the county without notice and that all labor and delivery records be preserved for concerns regarding “maternal emotional dysregulation.”
Dana read it twice.
“He can’t get custody of an unborn child,” I said.
“No,” she said. “But he can keep laying breadcrumbs for later.”
The cost arrived that same day. The hospital’s legal office told Dana that while they had flagged my chart and restricted visitors, Daniel remained the legal father unless a court said otherwise. If I went into labor before the protective hearing, security could keep him out only if the situation clearly fit the no-contact request and law enforcement supported it.
So Dana moved again. She arranged for me to stay the final weeks of pregnancy in a confidential domestic-violence apartment through a Raleigh nonprofit once my doctor agreed travel within the county was fine.
Leah cried when I packed.
“Are you sure?”
“No,” I said. “But I’m not giving him one place he knows I’ll be.”
That night, my phone buzzed with a blocked call that left a voicemail.
It was Daniel.
“Come home,” he said. His voice was almost gentle. “You know I’d never let anything happen to our son.”
I deleted nothing. Dana wanted everything saved.
Then a text came from Carol.
He says you’re listening to people who want to take his child. Please tell me if you and the baby are safe.
I stared at it for a long time.
May you like
My mother-in-law had finally asked the right question.
But not early enough.
