Chapter 5 - The Breach

> The flashing red and blue lights of three state police cruisers painted Ray’s living room walls in violent strokes of crimson and cobalt.

> The front door wasn't even locked; the troopers breached it with a swift, practiced shove, the heavy oak slamming against the drywall. Ray spun around from the wet bar, his scotch glass slipping from his fingers to shatter against the hardwood floor.

> "What is the meaning of this?" Ray roared, his face flushing a deep, angry crimson as two troopers stepped into the room. "I am a prominent board member of this community! You can't just barge into—"

> "Ray Vance, Daniel Vance," the lead state trooper announced, pulling out a pair of steel cuffs. "You’re under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, conspiracy, and aggravated elder abuse."

> Daniel stumbled back against the sofa, his eyes wide with blind panic. "There's a mistake! My sister set this up! She's crazy—"

> "The only thing she set up was a federal trap," the trooper interrupted, shoving Daniel's hands behind his back.

> I stepped through the front door, shaking the melting snow from my boots. I walked slowly into the living room, stopping right where Ray stood immobilized between two officers. The smug, condescending smile he had worn at the hospital gate was entirely gone, replaced by the hollow, trembling terror of a man realizing his entire life of manipulation had collapsed in seconds.

> "You..." Ray hissed, struggling against the cuffs. "You ruined everything."

> "I didn't ruin anything, Ray," I said quietly, looking down at his expensive, muddy shoes. "I just balanced the ledger."

> As they dragged Daniel past me, he stared at me with pure, unadulterated hatred, his voice cracking. "Mom will never forgive you for this! You locked up her favorite son!"

> "My mother is safe in a locked room," I replied coldly. "And she finally knows exactly who you are."
