Chapter 14 - The Girls Were Not Returned Like PropertyThree years after the investigation began, the family cases reached more stable arrangements.

Sofía remained with Lupita.
That had never become seriously contested.
Isabella’s situation changed gradually.
The Hanovers admitted they had ignored warning signs but cooperated once the truth emerged. After extensive evaluation, the court structured a long-term arrangement recognizing Lupita’s parentage while protecting Isabella’s attachment to the adults who had raised her.
There was no satisfying label.
Family rarely fits paperwork after adults have broken it badly enough.
Claire Hanover once told Lupita:
“I don’t know how to apologize for loving a child I should never have received.”
Lupita answered:
“Loving her wasn’t the crime.”
Claire cried.
“What was?”
“Believing you had the right not to ask where she came from.”
That distinction allowed them to speak again later.
Mia’s case took longer because the Dunns resisted acknowledging fraud.
Eventually, overwhelming evidence forced the issue.
They did not lose all contact instantly.
Mia was not punishment.
She was a child.
Therapeutic transitions, supervised relationships, and court reviews took years.
By age seven, she spent part of school breaks with Lupita and Sofía.
She still called the Dunns Mom and Dad.
Lupita learned to survive hearing it.
One summer afternoon the three girls sat on Lupita’s apartment floor making paper flowers.
Isabella was nine.
Mia seven.
Sofía three and mostly destroying the flowers.
Mia suddenly asked:
“Were we all inside you?”
Lupita froze.
Their therapist had helped prepare for questions like this.
“Yes.”
“All three?”
“Yes.”
“Did you want us?”
Lupita’s throat closed.
“I did once I knew you were there.”
Mia considered that.
“Even when you didn’t know how we got there?”
Especially then.
But Lupita kept the answer simple.
“Yes.”
Sofía shouted because she had glued paper to her own elbow.
The older girls laughed.
The impossible conversation ended in craft glue.

That was healing too.
Not every truth needed to consume the entire afternoon.
