Chapter 13 - The Engine Was Rebuilt the Honest Way

Prometheus did not restart the next week.

Or the next month.

The board shut the program down entirely until an outside engineering team rebuilt the lower containment architecture using Daniel’s notes, verified calculations, and the original alloy specification.

That mattered to Maria more than any press release.

No one was allowed to say Daniel “fixed” Prometheus from beyond the grave.

He showed them where the truth was.

Living engineers still had to do the hard work honestly.

Nine months later, Prometheus completed a sixty-second low-output test.

Then ninety seconds.

Then one hundred twenty.

Nobody cheered yet.

They let the system cool, reviewed the data, and repeated it.

At three minutes, the independent cutoff did not trigger.

At five minutes, the containment field remained stable.

At ten, the audit team finally let themselves breathe.

When Ethan called Maria that night, his voice shook a little.

“It ran.”

“For how long?”

“Ten minutes.”

“Safely?”

“Yes.”

Maria looked across the table at Lily, who was doing math homework and pretending not to listen.

“Then test it again,” Maria said.

Ethan laughed softly.

“Daniel used to say that.”

The second run lasted thirty minutes.

The third, two hours.

By the time Prometheus completed its first full continuous demonstration, Daniel Bennett’s name was back where it belonged on corrected patent filings and CrossTech’s internal engineering history.

Marcus Vale could no longer touch it.

Jonathan Cross could no longer profit from the lie that kept it trapped.

And for the first time in years, Maria heard Lily ask a question that had nothing to do with medicine, bills, or grief.

“Can we get pizza?”

That nearly made Maria cry.

May you like

Because it sounded like ordinary life.

And ordinary life had been the thing power kept stealing from them all along.
