Chapter 7 - Ryan Had Already Met a Divorce Lawyer

Ryan met with a divorce attorney six weeks before Noah died.

That wasn’t illegal.

People leave marriages.

He never filed.

His preliminary notes became relevant only after investigators obtained them during later civil discovery.

Ryan was worried about three things:

the house,

financial support,

and whether I would accuse him of being an uninvolved father.

He told the lawyer:

“My wife makes every minor illness into an emergency, then says I’m irresponsible if I disagree.”

The lawyer wrote:

Possible high-conflict medical decision-making.

Ryan asked whether medical disagreements could affect custody.

He was told family courts generally focus on the child’s best interests and actual evidence.

So Ryan began collecting evidence.

Not fabricating asthma itself.

Something subtler.

Screenshots of messages where I sounded worried.

Photographs of medication lined across the counter.

A calendar of appointments.

Notes about times I left work early.

He wanted to prove I was “medicalizing” Noah.

Sabrina encouraged him.

You need documentation so she can’t use the kid against you.

Then Ryan began creating his own documentation.

Portal messages telling Dr. Shah Noah was doing better.

Descriptions of me as anxious.

Canceled follow-ups.

Fewer evening controller doses.

If Noah looked fine without everything I insisted on, Ryan believed it supported his story.

He wasn’t trying to make Noah sick.

He was trying to prove I was wrong.

That distinction made what followed somehow more horrifying.

Because our child became evidence in an argument he didn’t know existed.

Then Dad found something in Ryan’s financial records through the civil divorce process.

A lease application.

Ryan and Sabrina had applied for an apartment together.

Move-in date:

three weeks after Noah’s death.

The application predated it.

They planned a new life.

That explained:

when your wife stops making such a big deal out of everything.

Sabrina expected Ryan to leave.

Ryan expected conflict.

And Noah’s asthma was going to become part of the custody fight.

Until there was no child left to fight over.

The apartment application was withdrawn the morning after Noah died.

Sabrina texted Ryan:

Everything is different now.

His reply:

May you like

No. Now it’s worse.

For once, I believed him.
