“Dad, please come pick me up. My husband, he…” Then the line went dead. When I arrived, her mother-in-law blocked the door. “It’s just a family matter.” My son-in-law sneered. “I’m teaching her some respect.” I found my daughter covered in bruises and unconscious on the shed floor. By sunrise, both of them were handcuffed – and I was the landlord where they were dragged away. My daughter’s scream ended in a burst of static, and every instinct I had as a father turned cold. Twelve minutes later, I was driving through the iron gates of the house where she had once promised me she was safe.  “Dad, please come pick me up,” Emily had sobbed.  Then the line died.
